What Does a Bidet Cost to Run in Australia? Power, Water and Paper Savings

It is one of the most common questions we get before someone buys: will this thing send my power bill through the roof? Fair question. An electric bidet seat heats water and warms a seat, and both use electricity. Here is a realistic look at what it actually costs to run one in an Australian home.
Electricity: less than you would think
An electric bidet seat only draws meaningful power in short bursts, when it heats water for a wash, warms the seat, or runs the dryer. The rest of the day it sits in standby using very little. Typical use in a household adds up to a small figure on your quarterly bill, in the order of a few dollars, not tens of dollars.
Two design choices make a real difference:
- Instant (tankless) heating warms water only as it flows, so there is no tank being kept hot around the clock. This is the more efficient approach and what most modern seats use.
- Eco or energy-saving mode lowers the seat temperature during hours you do not use the bathroom. If your model has it, turn it on. It is the single biggest saving available.

Water: a rounding error
This one surprises people. A bidet wash uses roughly half a litre of water, far less than a single toilet flush, which uses several litres. Compared to the water already going down your toilet every day, the bidet barely registers on your bill.
There is a bigger picture too: manufacturing toilet paper is water-intensive. Using less of it saves considerably more water than the bidet consumes.
The offset: toilet paper
Here is where the maths turns in your favour. Households that switch to a bidet typically cut toilet paper use dramatically, and most people keep a little for drying and that is it. Over a year, for a family, that is a meaningful chunk off the shopping bill, and it tends to more than cover the electricity the bidet uses.
If your model has warm air drying, paper use drops further still.
Small features, small draw
Comfort extras like a night light use very little power. An LED running for a few hours a night is negligible next to heating water. If you are trying to trim every watt, the seat heater is the setting worth adjusting, not the light.
What about maintenance?
Ongoing costs are close to zero. There are no cartridges or consumables to replace on a bidet seat.
